General Program
Family
Our primary therapeutic program is the family environment we create. Each house has a wonderful married couple living with up to ten children and raising them with the love, nurture and support that their own biological children enjoy. Our philosophy is that children experiencing crisis still need healthy attachment with stable parental figures. We are more than a home… we’re family.
Stability
One way we provide stability is through a consistent daily schedule. Household chores are a shared part of the children’s schedule primarily to teach the skills needed to maintain a healthy home of their own when they’re grown. Meal times are consistent and for many it is the first time in their life they could count on food being there when they were hungry. [story]
Counseling
We contract the services of state licensed Christian counselors who specialize in family and child therapy and/or trauma. Therapy is available to all our children. The frequency of counseling ranges from weekly to quarterly according to the child’s needs. We also utilize the services of therapists approved by a family’s insurance or other non-profits (such as EMPACT) when available and appropriate.
Chapel
Sunshine Acres has a weekly non-denominational chapel service on Sunday mornings at 10:30am. The Services are open to the public and guests are welcome to attend. For more information click here.
4-H and Equestrian
In addition to children, Sunshine Acres is also home to many animals. Over the years we have had donkeys, monkeys, emus, even alligators! Many of our animals are domestic pets, but we also have a 4-H program which teaches children important life lessons and gives them the opportunity to care for a living animal and develop personal confidence when presenting their animal at shows.
Choir
The Sunshine Acres Children’s choir has been a popular segment of our home since the early days. The choir presents a positive message through music and performing arts blessing community centers, churches and organizations and providing a wonderful opportunity for our children to showcase their gifts and talents. Choir season is October through April and books 6-12 months in advance. If you are interested in booking our choir please contact the front office at 480-832-2540.
